There is a myth that soap is not good for skin. I disagree! I believe that soap has just developed a bad reputation. The right soap with good quality ingredients can do wonders for the skin and also condition it.
Most commercial bars of soap, even face washes for that matter, are not really soap but detergents (you can take a look at the ingredients if you don’t believe me). These products make the skin dependent on the chemicals which in time get absorbed by the body.
I use a technique called cold process soap making to make my soaps from scratch using various oils like olive oil, coconut oil, shea butter, cocoa butter etc. These oils are saponified using lye to convert them to soap. This chemical process leads to production of glycerin which is a very valuable byproduct (most big companies extract this glycerin and sell it off as it makes more money). It involves meticulous calculations to develop a bar which is conditioning, soothing, moisturizing but also a hard bar, at the same time. And it takes a month before it can be used...phew!!!
Hey guys!
I am Shreya, a bath fanatic and a
personal care product junkie. I can spend hours in the shower slathering
homemade ubtans, facepacks and hair packs. I have extremely sensitive, acne
prone skin, so I need to take extra care about what I use. While the expensive
products didn’t do wonders for my skin, commercial ones totally damaged it. So
I wanted to make a product which didn’t make me break out and wasn’t drying at
the same time. This led to my love affair with soapmaking!!

There are a lot of
handmade soaps in the market now but most of these handmade soaps (often called
Melt and Pour or Glycerin Soaps) can be made using a purchased base in the form
of flakes, noodles or cubes. Different scents and colours can be added to this
base to customize it. It is a great way to make attractive soap but there is no
control over the quality of ingredients or chemicals used in the base. Most
branded “handmade soaps” are of this type. That is why I urge people to inspect
the ingredients used in skin care products.
I have recently set up a Facebook store under the name “Burst Of Happyness”.
People can browse through my creations on the page and also request if they
want something specifically formulated for their needs. I constantly experiment with fancy
ingredients that I can find in my kitchen like beer, chocolate, coffee, clays,
fruits and vegetables and even eggs. My most
popular soaps are Lager Lather (a beer soap), Coffee Scrub Bar (contains black
coffee, coffee grounds and cocoa butter) and Voila Coconut (contains coconut
milk and coconut shreds). I test all my
products on myself and my family and keep tweaking the recipe till I am 100%
confident of my product.
Do drop by and get tempted
to try something new in your bath!!!
Love,
Shreya.
