Last month, I went down to Kairali- The Ayurvedic Healing Village in Palakkad, Kerala for a staycation. Away from the hustle and bustle of our city lives, this ‘healing village’ is a must-visit if you are craving some peaceful time, need to connect with nature and also get treated for any physical conditions/ stress you may be suffering from. Read on for the deets!
Kairali is basically a chain of spas and healing resorts around the country, and also one of the best ayurvedic healing resorts around the world. The owners of the renowned chain, originally from Palakkad, started this with an aim to promote the kairali way of life- based on the principles of Ayurveda, amongst the people.
We flew from Delhi to Coimbatore (in Tamil Nadu), and thereafter took a bus from Coimbatore Airport to Palakkad in Kerala, crossing the state. You can also take a direct train to Palakkad from Delhi.
On reaching there
The full-blown village resort in Kerala is a place of sheer bliss. Away from the main city area, the healing village has a plush green entrance to welcome you to the lap of nature. They welcome you in the traditional way and serve you chilled coconut water to help you relax- organic coconuts grown on the farm are an amazing way to welcome us stressed out souls!
Accommodation & Facilities
The property has luxurious accommodation facility which is connected with nature all around. There’s a stream of water flowing in front of each room which helps calm your nerves all the time. The moment you enter your room, you are served with bottles full of water which has been boiled with tree barks for various purposes like detox and weight loss. The rooms have all modern facilities too but I really liked how you are reminded to go ‘natural’ at every step- like the tooth powder instead of a regular toothpaste which I totally loved!
The resort/ healing village has facilities like a fully equipped gymnasium, meditation room, badminton lawn (which doubles up as yoga area too), swimming pool, etc. apart from the treatment/ spa area (details below).
Food at the healing village is 100% vegetarian, completely organic and grown at the village itself. The recipes are made with very little use of oil and masalas, retaining the fibrous content and nutrients. If you are there for a specific treatment (e.g. weight loss), you will be given food as per the diet prepared for you by the Doctors.
PS: The resort is also 100% alcohol and tobacco free.
The spa/ treatments
Being a certified ‘hospital’ along with a spa, you can go to Kairali for general wellness or for specific medical treatments- the ayurvedic way. Since I went there for no specific treatment, I mainly chose spa services for me for relaxation. The spa centre has been made in the traditional way. There are no air conditioners in the rooms, with (only) windows for ventilation. The therapists know their job really well- two of them working on your body at the same time in a very synchronized pattern just make your treatment so much better. After the massage, you are given a fresh paste made from various lentils, curd, etc. (ubtan) to take a shower with which leaves your skin glowing and fresh too.
